Projects >> Royal Observatory display
Astronomy has aways fascinated me, so developing this new display was a real treat. It explains the work of the United Kingdom Astronomy Technology Centre, which builds instruments for the most advanced telescopes on Earth - and in space. I did the research, interpretation planning and copywriting; Neil Gallacher of Studio Muse did the graphic design and managed the exhibition fit out.
Move
Forming a backdrop to one of the historic telescope domes, the display complements guided tours.
The telescope that dominates the dome was the largest in Britain when it was installed in 1930: a great opportunity to contrast today's instruments with yesterday's.
The display explains how astronomers no longer use visible light to study far-off places in the universe, as well as giving an idea of the profound discoveries they may make.
Four sample projects from the UK Astronomy Technology Centre illustrate both the range of the Centre's work as well as the different sections of the electro-magnetic spectrum.
Interviews with scientists and technicians bring the projects alive, and make clear how good science depends on teamwork.
