Projects >> Knockan Crag

Knockan, in the far north-west of Scotland, inspired work by pioneering geologists Ben Peach and John Horne that laid the foundations of modern geology. Working with John Finlay Associates and Ross Associates we realised the vision of presenting the site in a populist, lively style.

Knockan 1
  • Knockan 1
Knockan looks out across the dramatic landscape of Assynt, where the structure of the Earth is laid bare.
  • Knockan 2
An open-sided visitor centre with a turf roof is placed a short distance from the car park, encouraging visitors to explore the landscape just a little more than they might otherwise do.
  • Knockan 3
Ben Peach and John Horne feature strongly in the display, acting as guides for today's visitor.
  • Knockan 4
The drama of the Earth's formation, and of the slow drift of tectonic plates that have moved Scotland across the face of the Earth, is told in lively cartoon-strips.
  • Knockan 5
Mechanical interactives help to bring the story alive.
  • Knockan 6
On the trail round the site visitors are encouraged to touch the rocks. This gives the story of earth movement a strong physical dimension.
