About me

Since 1997 I have worked as a freelance consultant on:

  • interpretation projects
  • interpretation plans, strategies and policies
  • training and facilitation

I am a Fellow of the Association for Heritage Interpretation, the United Kingdom’s professional body for this fascinating and varied activity.

James Carter

I believe that interpretation is a creative act that engages visitors with a place, an object, or an event. My work reflects this, and has often involved artists, poets and sculptors.

I specialise in interpretation that takes an imaginative approach to its subject and is sensitive to the environment in which it is placed. Above all I believe that interpretation should engage its audience and enhance their experience, not preach to them.

Have a look at the Projects and Training sections of the website for examples of my work, or contact me for more details. I've written many articles and papers on the subject: you’ll find a selection in the Writing section. You can also get a pdf format of my full curriculum vitæ (or resumé if you’re reading this in the United States).

Past lives

Before starting work as a freelance, I worked for the Centre for Environmental Interpretation, a small unit that worked to raise the profile of interpretation and promote good practice in the field.

Before that, I’d worked as a development and adventure training tutor, countryside ranger, historic house guide, tourist information officer, farm labourer, and radio journalist. In between the tourist information and farm work I made a solo journey overland to India via the Middle East. I studied English Literature at University, and spent rather too much time there messing about putting on plays. I reckon I still draw on all these experiences in what I do now!
